Although I enjoy watching strange, and often times uncomfortable movies, here are a few of my favorites. If you haven’t seen these what are you doing reading this blog? Rent them! NOW

After a grueling day of headaches and the doctor’s recovery regiment, Joseph and I settled in for an evening feature film A Good Woman. Not knowing anything about this movie, at first I thought it was directed by Woody Allen, classically depicted by a 1920’s musical opening with black and white credits. Not to mention Scarlet Johansen, Woody Allen’s latest muse, is the star of the show. But as it turns out, it really isn’t a Woody Allen picture at all… It is an Oscar Wilde play, directed by Mike Barker. It had all the hallmarks of a British film, as Joseph would say. It was everything you could ask for from an Oscar Wilde creation. The characters were fun and ever so British, the fashions were glamorous, and the Italian scenery was breathtaking. Joseph and I both enjoyed watching A Good Woman and suggest it for any night of the week. It is lighthearted and warm and leaves you wanting more of Oscar Wilde’s shenanigans.

In respect to our rule {being as British as possible in the walls of our flat}, it was absolutely necessary we watch a little Sunday night Masterpiece Theater. This week’s feature, My Boy Jack, a story that follows John, Rudyard Kipling’s son, as he goes from a young boy of 17 to an infantry lieutenant in the French trenches of WWI. Sound a bit slow and dark… well we are talking about a British film! Not knowing much about the author’s life, Joseph and I researched a bit on Kipling and found his life to be fascinating. You can watch the synopsis, interviews, credits, etc. on Masterpiece Theater’s official website at PBS.

If you watch The Office every Thursday, then you’ve probably been waiting to see George Clooney’s latest project, Leatherheads, staring John Krasinski, George Clooney, and Renee Zellweger. Joseph and were excited by the prospect of two comic goof balls like Clooney and Krasinski together on screen. As we sat through the never-ending intro of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-like sepia photo montage accompanied by Randy Newman’s 20’s ragtime score… we started to think we were in trouble. And it turns out we were right. Besides the two or three funny moments in the film, it was less about football or comedy and more about “getting the girl” which is one of my least favorite girls, Renee Zellweger. I was hoping it would be much better due to all the potential that was there… but I have to say I only recommend this movie if you are bored on a summer night and it is raining outside and every movie at the store is already taken… You can probably do a better job making a screenplay in your mind for this movie. I like the one in my head better

Mom, dad, and I watched Elizabeth: The Golden Age while I was home. It was such a beautifully directed movie and the costumes were glamorous and inspiring. Even the smallest details in the movie had beautiful attention given to them. The dialog was smart, as well as the plot. I believe the director took some liberties in retelling the store of Elizabeth in her middle age. As a historical account I don’t know how it stands up, but as a movie it was fun to watch and a glimpse into the life of royalty. I guess Clive Owen wasn’t a bad thing to add to the mix
Mom and I didn’t mind…

Emilie, Joseph and I watched Becoming Jane last night, mostly for James McAvoy! Well, I cannot speak for Joseph
It was typical slow-British, and without my glasses on every character looked the same. I believe it was somewhat biographical of Jane Austin’s life and times, but it is a movie, and who knows. Other than that it was pretty. After Emilie left Joseph and I continued our Film Friday with Goya’s Ghost, also known as the worst movie ever. DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE.
I also recently watched The History Boys, which had an underlying young-gay-coming-of-age theme to it with no real plot line or character development. Despite the list of British stars, the ending was anti-climatic and failed to deliver. Sad to say. Also, do not watch this movie.

In good movie news, Joseph and I actually went to the theater to see Michel Gondry’s latest imaginary tale Be Kind Rewind. This is a fun movie and I truly think anyone would enjoy it. The film itself is very Gondry – the framing, music, characters… still impressive. Go out and see it! Mos Def!
